Bump...
Gotta keep this baby in circulation. This thread should never be on page 2. |

I peeled that, and the result put me back on track, being as it looked so much more ‘right’ after that fix.
And with that, the demolition of the red layer commenced with gusto.
This was a time to continue embracing my extra focus on the back surface detailing.
... but I did have to convince myself to stop in order to do a tracing of the red striping, which I added to the first ‘clean’ B&W tracing.

... during this build, I left some of the drilling much later than previously. Creating the damage paths around these is always interesting.
... it’s also rather funny to have to very carefully mimic the way Ed seemed to have put some of the tape onto the B&W and cut it right on the body. Perhaps in the future I can incorporate this WHILE the gull mask is still on, rather than later... (note to self...)
Steve,
In studying your build, this post has me intrigued. How many coats would you say you used on the red layer? It appears that Ed may have just used less paint up by the horn and top of guitar and more below the bridge.
How many coats did you use, including the extra taping and painting? Seems like a fine line with having the black stripes show through but not having "transperenstein"
Thanks

Great question...
... sadly, the answer is, 'I'm not certain' - that's because I was going by looks.
And as documented, I went back and added more red to deepen it and improve the look of the coverage... I'd stopped TOO soon.
I'd say it was probably 4-5 'whispy' hits, if that makes sense; foundation ones were very gentle, then in the middle they became 'wetter' coats... and then more relatively light hits to get it to the more correct look.
And Ed just sprayed until he felt it was enough, or (I honestly think) the can ran out... |

I was thinking the same thing.

When I get to this step (soon hopefully)......I am just thinking I am going to shoot very slowly and gradually over a 2-day period......I know that's a little risky when you want to pull the tape quickly after completion......
Though I guess the best bet is to just do scrap wood with the same paints and see where the fine line is between just enough and too much..... |

The trick; I truly believe that, aside from the colour, the OPACITY of that original Schwinn paint is what makes this so ellusive...
Photographic evidence shows what one of our other bretheren named 'goopy' paint; you can see the accumulated thickness of paint in some areas in particular (butt end just behind the bridge for instance - also top horn... while at the same time, it remains surprisingly translucent. The black show-through is just perplexing, and the only way I've made it make sense to myself is to accept that the older paint spec didn't deepen up or 'solidify' in colour as quickly as the more modern paints we're dealing with.
So, to arrive at what looks like the right red colour, the paint is a physically thinner layer as compared to Ed's original.
It's just something we're saddled with due to the time period and evolved paint technologies, I would say. |

I noted that that view # was coming up - cool that you noted it also.
... now, if only QGF would come back and give some more 'impression' chatter...

I still live...
I've got four plates spinning on poles on my left hand, and I'm juggling five balls with my right, all the while keeping the line of poodles jumping through the proper hoops... I will check in as all this permits.
I know I'm a loser. I'm becoming comfortable with it... but I do apologize. |
