Hey All,

Well after several long weeks of research and waiting for parts to arrive, I finally got a few hours of work into this project.

As noted in ScOrch's thread, I also needed to re-route the blocking for the Floyd as the KnE body did not accommodate the Brass Big Block and Retro Arm.

Neck is from Musikraft. Thanks to YMI5150 for the tip to correct the shape of the headstock and other help. This is my first try a relic'in the neck. While I am happy with the results, I am concerned it's a little too dark?

Anyway. I feel I should thank everyone who posts here. Without this forum and the members, I would be overwhelmed with the details required for this project.

Looking great. It did bother me that their head stock is too tight. Don't worry about the neck being to dark.. I have the gray hue and I would like it to be darker.

Looks good. Is that a new EVH pickup?
The neck may be a little dark, IMO. Might be able to hit it with some steel wool to lighten it up.

Hey guys...

I just hit the neck with some 400 & 600 grit sand paper to lighten it up. I still have to treat it with GunStock Oil. I don't want it any darker, actually a shade lighter/grey was what I was going for. Oh-well still really fring'in happy with the results.

That just an extra pickup I had around. I just have it out as I want to wire everything up & intonate before I paint (double check). It a GFS VEH. It came in a Kramer Barreta Re-hab guitar I pickup up on Craigslist several months ago. It is OK for the price (I think they are about $35), but absolutely no where near as good as the EVH pick-ups. When I completed the Kramer project I put the EVH Frankenstrat pickup in the finished Barreta and was totally blown away.

I ordered the EVH Wolfgang from VH Store and plan to pull the EVH Frankenstrat pickup currently in the Kramer and put it in my finished Frankie. I will put the Wolfgang in the Barreta when it comes in.

What stain or process did you use to age your neck?

UPDATE:

Well here is a quick status update. I hit the neck with some 000 steel wool and worked my way up to 0000 to lighten it up a bit. I also have completed two very thin coats of Gun Stock Oil and worked it very smooth with steel wool. The neck feels great. I can't wait to play it.

To relic the neck I applied Ebony and Brown stain with separate stencil brushes and quickly wiped the stain away with a dry rag.

Pick guard is complete. I used brown stain to dull the white on the pick guard edges. I also needed to age my quarter as it was uncirculated when I purchased it.

I have applied two coats of Grain Filler thus far. How many coats do most people recommend before paint?

Two applications may be enough, but I would take it outside and look at it under the afternoon sunlight. If you still see open pores, like this, then you need another application.

Looks great. Neck is awesome and good job making it look the part by rounding the corner.

There should be some grain showing when you're done so I'd stop there but that's my opinion. depends on the look you're going for. I acually don't use grain filler at all. just 3 heavy coats of sanding sealer.

A few Pics and Update Number 2:

Well I have the assembly complete. It took some time, but I am really happy I did. I needed to break out the router again, as I did not take enough off the off the front side of the floyd route to fit the brass big block. The floyd would not sit level until I took out more material.

I set the intonation and am very happy that everything sets up well. The high E is sitting very forward, but is tuned correctly and intonates. I think the nut is sitting a little high and I will need to have some frets leveled out on final assembly. The pick-up is not the final (I will put a EVH Frank in the guitar on final assembly).

Question for everyone. What string gauges are on the Fender Frankie Replica - 9-46? or 42?

Also, I still need to put in the string retainer. Can anyone share a Pic of the Original or the Replica. I know it is off set with at least 2 extra holes, but I want to get it right!

I'm really enjoying watching this build. I see you have a push/pull pot on the table...... are you giving some function to the neck pickup?

Thanks for the encouragement Sc0rch,

I was originally considering using the single coil up front, but I am concerned with the tone and the height adjustment needed to get good tone. I have reviewed your build thread numerous times for guidance and know you used a push/pull.

Can I ask what Single Coil you used and how do you think it turned out? Did you need to set pick height much higher than you would normally for a replica?

I ended up with a GFS Neovin 9 single coil in there, which is actually a rail humbucker with a fake single coil piece. Super quiet and it sounds pretty good actually, but the thing with Neovins is you have to get as close to the strings with them as you possibly can. They have a very small magnetic pull though so I didn't notice any difference in sustain.
