It finally came today. I got a sweet deal on an Epiphone Explorer Korina on "the bay" and I'm going to make it a Shark. It was only 3 Bens because it is stamped with "2nd" on the back of the headstock. There are a couple of light surface scratches, but who cares; I'm going to rough it up and paint over it anyway!

As near as I can tell, about everything is near identical with the exception of the switch "route" - it's a little more oblong, too much to be covered with a jack plate. When I cut the chunk from the back, I'll shape a piece and glue it in there to shrink the hole *giggity* and then fill and sand it smooth.

I've already got all the hardware I need, including 3 chrome tuners and a white bridge pickup & ring. I've attached a couple of pictures - I'll take more tomorrow. First thing I did was tune it and plug it in...WOW, awesome sound/tone. Shame to hack it up, but it must be done. Laughing

I'll be asking questions along the way and any help/advice regarding the Shark will be greatly appreciated.

My first question is: How was Ed's wired and what would I specifically re-wire to modify this one to match? I believe Ed only had the bridge pickup wired.

Correction, I believe both pickups were wired to work separately, with the "center" switch location being non-functional - as can be heard after the solo in "You Really Got Me". Now...how to disconnect that center switch location...

This is going to be a fun project to watch. I'm guessing that's probably a poly finish. What are your plans for that?

I'll be using Duplicolor acrylic lacquer in rattle cans. I've had good luck with it in my other builds. My thought was to really rough up the surface with a 220 grit sandpaper, then spray the silver base coat and go from there. The poly, being factory finished, should be fully cured and provide a good surface as long as I give it a nice tooth for the new paint to adhere to. Also, I'll be clearcoating it for a smooth, factory-like finish.
Anyone have experience knowledge they could share regarding spraying acrylic lacquer over poly?

I did it over a squier some time ago, I didn't rough it up... Still paint chips off today to see the original paint. I would sand it all of really, but eddie didn't do that... You can still see the white under coat. Maybe a primer. If you don't want to sand it all off, rough the %$# out of it.

Ok...so I've been kind of slacking on this project; mainly because I've been engrossed in other things with summer being here. But I'm ready to make my cuts. I've stripped all of the hardware off, including the nut, and marked out the locations for the holes and edge cuts using a template.

I won't be doing any work on it this weekend, as I'll be frolicking at the lake. But I plan to hit it hard next week and hopefully painting by next weekend!

I started drilling the holes last night. First a pilot hole and gradually working up to the 3/8" bit. Right in the middle of my 3rd hole, the drill press developed a short. I tripped the garage breaker about 7 times before I decided to wait until my dad could look at the press this weekend (it's his press). Looks like I won't be painting this weekend Sad
That's ok, though, because I have a date! Very Happy

I finished drilling the holes this afternoon. I really like how it's taking shape, especially visually with the holes drilled. I also scored to bottom cut-off by the output jack. I don't have a table saw or band saw, so I may be using a hacksaw to cut between the holes (how authentic is that!) Anyone have a good solution to raise the brass nut a little? The original plastic nut was a little taller than the brass one I'm going to use, so I'm thinking of gluing a thin strip of wood (1/16") in the slot.

I may explore a jigsaw for the cuts, too...we'll see.

I've already got the paint, but I just went searching the house for it and misplaced it! I'm using Duplicolor Truck/Van/SUV acrylic lacquer out of the spray cans. I've got a white primer, a metallic silver, and a metallic red that has a little maroon tint to it. I'll have to search some more to find it...stuff's around here someplace!!! Laughing

edit: Found it. It's Silver Metallic and Red Metallic Clearcoat (which will look awesome since I WILL be clearcoating) Can't wait to get started!

Funny you should ask! I've been slacking bigtime on this because I'm ready to make my cuts, just been scrambling around to find things I'll need. The weather's getting colder, and I'm off tomorrow, so I believe that tomorrow is the day I start chopping! I found a great straight edge to use for a perfect cut (I hope).

I've also got my uncle's router and roll-over bit on standby, ready to round off the top and bottom edges of the straight cut. (I believe it's an 1/8" rounded edge). I'm excited!!
