I've been trying to get that early VH tone out of my 5150 head for a while now, this is the closest I've come so far, what do you think? Oh BTW, I know, my playing sucks, my timing is off, wrong chords, out of tune, just talking tone here. Laughing

Thanks guys!!!!

Thanks! Yeah, that is 100% dry, no effects at all, guitar->amp.

less gain and more volume. his tone is very hard to get without a Plexi cranked. its all about saturated power stage and working the hell out of the speakers. just get close to where you're happy and call it good.

don't worry about the number. try dropping gain more, turn it up as loud as you can and record it again. tune down a half step too. sounds like you've got standard tuning.

Yup standard tuning, I'll give it a shot, should I still run it dry? There are no effects on there at all, guitar>amp.

its fine. I do the same. you can add that later. work dry til your close. add effects to get the last 5%.

tuning flat will loosen the strings and give that chug you're missing on the drop D. make sure to palm mute that to get the right effect.

Yup, that is good advice, just keep in mind I'm looking for the early Plexi "Grail Tone", not necessarily just VH.

That's easy, anyone can do that, but hardly anyone can get that tone out of a 5150 Laughing

funny.

even if you have all of Ed's gear, its still tough to sound like Ed...I have a sup'd up 68 super lead and i can tell you that when you dime everything, its like trying to drive an Indy car on a frozen lake in Minnesota. once i got that amp, I had a whole new appreciation for his abilities. its a beast!

That is a very good point.

Just because you DO get a plexi or alike, it gonna take something more to be able to handle it. That is ALOT of power & VOLUME and you really have to get used to playing at those levels to feel comfortable with it.
