Here you go.
FYI, I found out that in order to get the pot in this location, the body had to be modified. For those of you who are building extremely accurate red Frankies, you'll need to remove some wood in the control cavity. I'll post pics in my build thread.

Interesting....... I've just had look at pic I've got on my computer of the rehearsals for VH2 and there DOES seem to be something (looks almost like the shaft of a pot) sticking out of the pickguard right where that piece of tape seems to be...... Wonder if it coud be a TONE pot???? (Lets not forget that there was one hidden in the back of the Bee)
(Ignore the green circle and arrow... That was for a "what the hell guitar is this" thread a couple of years back..) |

could be. there was a tone pot in the lineup in 1979 shortly after it saw red and had the Tele bridge pup in the middle. it also looks like the neck pup was actually wired into the circuit back then. separate topic though...
such mysteries... |

| thinking about it a few more seconds, wouldn't you think that since the shaft is so close to the edge of the pick guard that there would be a gap showing from the cavity modification necessary to get the pot to fit? I had to use a dremmel to modify the cavity in order for the volume pot to fit (a necessary mod for an accurate Franky as well). This mysterious feature is even closer to the edge than the volume pot. Hmmm.... |

I agree!! But there DOES seem to be a 'round spot' showing from the lighting on the tape. Maybe he just wanted to hide the fact that there was a tone pot on there... You know our Ed and his secrets......
(I don't know if they were available at the time but you CAN get 'mini pots' ... I do seem to recall some on an old Satellite guitar that I had when I was about 12... So 1979 then...) |

Just another reason this site is the best! Where else can you get this kind of info?! |

I've been looking at that hole myself.
Could it be perhaps a switch that was on the guitar at some point? Eddie often used a switch to create the chopped (signal loss) effect which can be created by turning a switch from active to inactive rapidly like in You Really Got Me. Could it be a switch so he could do that live? |
