I've got an original idea that's going to take some time to fully complete but will be AWESOME when done. The first stage has begun: my 5150. I got the "unchained" model from MeanStreetGuitars and Mitchell was kind enough to leave it unfinished for me. I sanded the paint he had on it (polyester) sprayed primer over it just to be safe. I'm using Duplicolor lacquer. I then sanded the primer a little and sprayed the white, which is where I am now. I have a couple of questions for the experts on the board:

1. Would it be wise to lightly sand (and I mean like NO pressure) the white to smooth it out and make the tape adhere to the body better? This would provide crisper, finer lines I think.

2. I'm making a clearcoat replica (I LOVE a glassy shine). Has anyone put the 5150, stars, and Kramer decals under the clearcoats? I'm going to add tons of clearcoat to level out the lines and edges, but I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips, trick, or objections.

I'm very excited. I'll post pics of the progress along the way. This Thursday it's on to striping and the red coats! (No, I'm not referring to "strippers and the British"!) Thanks for any help anyone will provide.

You could wetsand it, but I don't think you need to. I didn't and my lines are laser sharp.

I wouldn't clearcoat over the spacetape decals, but that's just me. The Kramer logo is a waterslide decal, so you're fine painting over that.

I know what you mean, nhotas. I'm already looking forward to starting my black/white Frankenstrat. Here are some more pics of the 5150 progress...
Headstock with the red. (The neck and black body are going to be my Frankie; just got them yesterday!)

Very crisp lines!

A good 2 hours of masking results in this...

And the back, which brings me to where I am now.

This is a whole lot of fun! And it keeps me from going out blowing my money on whiskey! Haha.

Ok, so I've got a quick question for you guys who have done a 5150 and clear-coated the whole thing...do/did you clearcoat the BACK of the headstock after painting it red? I'm trying to decide if I just want to do the top or go all out and do the back and sides too.

The tape comes off tomorrow and I'll post more pics. The headstock is done (except for clearcoat) and looks freakin' dynamite!

Couldn't peel the body tape off today, I had to hit it with another coat of red because the color was a little funky in some spots due to my last spray can running out. Tomorrow is the unmasking! Here's the headstock, though...to whet the appetite.

I'm still curious about clear coating the back of the headstock. Any of you guys clear coated the headstock back?

I didn't clear the back of mine. I didn't want the transition between unfinished and finished to be too thick. Clear on the front is good to level out the stripes. I just don't see the need for it on the back IMHO.

Everybody forgets the little R in the Kramer logo. I rejected some decals that didn't have it...

It's okay to sand between coats when using Duplicolor.
I would suggest not using anything finer than 400 grit to allow "tooth" for the following coats to adhere properly.
As for tape ... I'd recommend "Fine Line" for nice crisp lines. Wink

Clearing over the "5150" and stars will cause the Space Tape to appear less vibrant. I also think that applying them on top of the clearcoat sorta adds another dimension to the graphics.

Email these guys ...

The Kramer logos aren't listed on their website, but I'm pretty sure they have them.
They're made of very thin, high quality vinyl.

I think Shael (nobozos777) also sells them on eBay.
His are really good quality as well.
