Main Entry: leg·end
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English legende, from Anglo-French & Medieval Latin; Anglo-French legende, from Medieval Latin legenda, from Latin, feminine of legendus, gerundive of legere to gather, select, read; akin to Greek legein to gather, say, logos speech, word, reason
Date: 14th century
1 a: a story coming down from the past ; especially : one popularly regarded as historical although not verifiable b: a body of such stories c: a popular myth of recent origin d: a person or thing that inspires legends e: the subject of a legend
Using the above definition, I think he'll always easily fall into a and d. That said, he's no longer breaking new ground or taking the guitar in a direction it hasn't been before. I think this is the main reason there's no new music coming out. If I had peaked and knew I couldn't attain anything close to what I'd previously achieved in my career and was certain I'd be judged heavily at any attempt, I'd be looking for a new line of work.
Personally, I'm nothing near the level of EVH fan most (if not all) of you here are. I just signed up a few months ago to get inspiration for a build. But for me his total body of work is looking pretty average right now. I'd honestly prefer to continue to enjoy the first few albums than to have more less than stellar performances bringing the average lower.
There's a lot to be said for getting out on top, but he missed that opportunity more than 25 years ago. He's doing nothing more now than the same thing KISS and most of the other bands from the 70's/80's are doing...letting die-hard fans pad their retirement accounts. But, by definition, still a legend. |
