dunno scorch, if I were you I might leave that neck relatively clean. Ed did have a 22 fret stat neck on there remember... didn't have the 'tele heel' burns. so, kind of authentic as is...

Awesome pics, looks great! Cool

Did some headstock burning today. combination of a butane cigarette lighter and some real smokes. I think it came in a little bit dark, but I'm sanding it down it bit. I'm happier the headstock isn't bare anymore.

ps.... i DON'T recommend using a butane lighter. too hard to control!!

Seriously, you don't thinks it's too dark? I'm thinking of taking the tuners right off and sanding down the whole headstock face and starting over today, it's bugging me THAT much.

Well, if it's bugging you then you should change it. Because it will just bug you more every day. Sanding it down and starting over will probably give it a rougher feel which might be nice. remember, the burns happened by multiple uses. here's what my old strat neck looked like (ignore the mk next to it). i used cigs + a soldering iron, but wasn't happy with the iron burns, didn't feel right to me, bugged me, and eventually i switched to the new neck. But i also did some burning, sanded down, burned again. it's tricky for sure. I'm going to be tackling this bit soon on mine, always tough. To your point though, I've always found that what bugs me today will bug me twice as much tomorrow...

Ditto on the 'bugs you today' aspect for sure...
I found this aspect daunting, being as it stands such a big chance of looking random in the wrong ways...
Very hard to control the elephant while still making it seem like a free-range elephant... (what - there are such things... honest... maybe...)

I do think it's quite valid to go with something that has completely the right vibe to it, even if it doesn't match the photos as well as you'd like...
Ringleheim used this phrase, which stuck in my mind as being the perfect descriptor in a case like this; as long as the look of it agrees with itself, then it's going to have the right feel to it.

Either way, whatever you do, I recommend you tend to it only because it's bothering you - and it's okay to do so now, because you've lived with it for a while, and have now determined that it's still enough of a niggle to pick at.

Happy re-burning is the short version =]

Cheers!
