Post subject: Newbie Franky project here!! - Already In Progress  PostPosted: Dec 05, 2011 - 03:23 PM

Well i'm no stranger to VH projects, i'm just a newbie when it comes to actually doing it right (well close enough).

I'm nowhere near as obsessive with details as you guys, however i'm trying to go for fairly accurate. Figure 75 on a 100 scale. I took the same approach with my 5150 project, and so far i'm extremely happy with it. The front and back i tried to pay attention to where the tape goes, but i didnt really pay much attention to tape locations on the sides.

So that being said, while i'm waiting for the neck to arrive on my 5150 project, the franky project got started. As i said, im not going for Dead On accurate, but close enough for my liking. I'm also looking to spend the least amount as possible on this without sacrificing my own happiness. So parts like the original floyd are being replaced with a floyd rose special, etc.

Anywhere here you go! Heres the progress thus far. Coments are welcome!

Body - exit98guitars ebay franky
neck - i'm still unsold on this one. I'm either going to reuse the exit98guitars 21 fret franky neck. Or take the mightymite 22 fret birdseye i have and turn it into a beak neck. This will most likely be a gametime decision, and i'll *probably* end up relic'ing and mounting the 21 fret neck for a while, and see if i change my mind.
pickup - duncan 59
neck pickup - POS black single coil repainted
Tremolo - Floyd Rose Special
Paint - Rustoleum Painters Touch Enamel

The guitar as it was disassembled, next to my 5150 replica waiting for its neck

Next the guitar got sanded down to the wood (had a thin clear coat on it) and shot with black. The black came out VERY VERY glossy and smooth. On a previous *for fun* build i did a few years back, i remember getting the same result, and then having immense cracking problems when i shot the white. So to remedy i scuffed it back up wetsanding with 220grit, then shot it over again with a light coat of black, this time standing much further back. Did the trick. So i taped it up, and shot the white..

While waiting for the paint to cure, i decided to turn some attention to the parts. First up was what to do with the single coil. I really didnt want to shell out $40 for the replicator, nor did i want to bother ordering phenolic linen sheets to cut out bobbin toppers. So i took the pos single coil that came with the kit, and gave it a spray. I used a red primer i had laying around from something totally unrelated and it actually came out perfect.

On to my favorite part............Relic'ing!!!

A lot of work with an xacto knife, a pair of small scissors, and some 220 sandpaper for wetsanding. After it was all done, i took some 100 grit and lightly went over the guitar to give it the surface scratches that the real EVH has (which i'm assuming is from him trying to scuff up the paint before the red was applied)

Thats is thus far............Tonight i'll be drilling the pickguard holes, then the taping for the red begins. Still trying to find my 1971 quarter. My CRL switch, divebomb pickguard, and tuners should be here today hopefully.

Looks good so far. Just wondering, what made you decide to go with enamel paint? I'll be curious to hear what you think of the results, any issues or not. Doesn't it take a while to cure?
Also, not sure if you care (i totally understand the version you're doing and it looks great), but you missed a stripe bit here... just incase you wanted to change before hitting the red...
Looking forward to seeing the next round!

Hey man. Basically my decision to work with enamel vs laquer boils down to "its just what i have locally". I basically went into home depot, found the color spray paints i was looking for, and thats that. I've done a few enamel paint jobs in the past (both evh, and john petrucci) and i've never had a problem. The 5150 was done with your typical Krylon spray paint and it looks great! If i was going for a more glossy pro finish, i wouldnt use regular spray enamel. But for EVH beat up guitars, why not!

Also as for the missing line, yeah i do notice it. Really it boiled down to the fact that any tape i used on the front or back, that didnt wrap around, is going to be missing on the sides. I used 2" tape and cut it into 3/4" strips, so it was a lot of "measure, cut, lay, measure cut lay, etc". No piece was longer than 12" or so. BUT as i said earlier, this really isnt going for dead on accurate. Its gonna be just something to play and hang on my wall, not to sell or sit in a display case Smile

Taped up ready for red! Left the lower left hand corner on the back covered up because i'm going to give it an angled misting shot after the rest of the red is painted up to get the "fading towards the edge" look. Kinda the same thing with the area aroudn the trem cover.

Probably not going to be able to do the red until later this week. Lots and lots of rain on the way Sad Was hoping my switch would be here yesterday so i could start on that, but didnt show. Hopefully today. 5150's neck should arrive today too! Can finally button that project up

Slowly but surely making progress. The weather here *NY* has been awful so i havent had an opportunity to do any painting on the franky Sad Its given me a chance to get more work done on my 5150 replica (thread here http://halen.com/evh/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=694866) and start aging/prepping some franky parts.

Finally got the CRL switch in, so it was time to age it. Came brand new from guitarpartsresource.com

After first trying vinegar and salt, with no luck, i just dumped it in a cup of bleach for 2-3 hours and it did the trick. Took it out, rinsed it off with warm water, then gave it a little bat of salt water and let it sit out for another hour or two. After that it was perfect. The waferboard/connections board comes in a see through yellowish color stock, so after the switch was done aging i painted it with a fine brush and some rust colored acrylic paint. Did the trick.

Once that was done, i shot it with a quick couple of coats of matte finish clear coat, and while it was tacky i covered it in dust and particles laying around my basement studs. Looks great!

Weather is starting to look better, so hopefully i'll get to shoot it down in some red this weekend. Pickguard should be here any day now, and i'm probably goign to start relicing the neck tonight or tomorrow with some graphite powder. Stay tuned!

Well time for some major updates!!!!

Got a chance to finally spray the red late last week, and get moving on relicing this weekend. As of right now, the guitar sits 95% done!!!

The guitar is actually assembled as of now, just waiting on the pickguard from divebomb, my reflectors, and a few odds and ends (cigarette burn).

Heres a few pics of the "after paint before aging" progress

And heres a little tease thus far Wink I have some high res pics of the post aging body that i took outside on sunday. Just need to upload them from my camera. Heres my "Pre finished" stars and stripes photo Wink

So i had to create a new username because stupid Halen.com wont send my password to my original account's email. NO matter how many times i click "send password" it never shows up. oh well. I created this username now, and made sure to change the password to something i'd remember haha Smile

UPDATE - FRANKY IS DONE!!!!

high res photos coming as soon as its not ugly and rainy out, but heres some teasers in the meantime. 5150 gets finished tonight since the pickup is arriving via USPS. I'm going to take my own high res version of stars and stripes this weekend hopefully, but attached is another low res attempt Smile Since i've taken these pics, i've also put the duct tape on for a pick holder.

You be the judge, but for my first actually full on franky attempt, i think it came out pretty darn awesome.

Hey I think you did a nic job! Sometimes I think we get to "over the top" when trying for accuracy. But yours turned out great.

Looks great man. You did a nice job...congrats!
Just one thing though. Is the humbucker in backwards? Did you want it that way? I've seen it done before. Again nice job!
