Hi guys. I have a question about Eddies former rig. He used a Palmer speaker simulator in it but did he use it only as a power soak or soak+cab sim? If he used the sim part it makes the signal ready for line recording and will sound very similar to a amp with a mic but when he powers the signal up again with the H&H 800 to feed the cabs, wouldn't that make it a "double" cab?? I mean, first you simulate a cabinet and then you send the signal to an actual cab.
Jim Alexander has the same setup, if you read this, have you tried both configurations (with and without speaker sim)? How will that affect the effects, detune etc?
I'm planning on getting a rig and need to know this before choosing between a THD hotplate (just power soak, no speaker sim) or a Palmer or equivalent product.
Thanks |

I have a Palmer and it is an excellent sounding tool. There is no "double cab" thing going on. At one time I owned a hot plate then I was able to get one of these and it beats the hot plate hands down.
You will not regret the Palmer! |

| the palmer was used for nothing more then to grab a line level signal to feed the rack. it was a glorified thru box. this was all that was around then. it was not used as a speaker sim or anything else. |

Thanks! So a hotplate will do the job as good as a Palmer? I could have use for a speaker sim when I want to play with headset but I'm not sure it's worth the money. Have you tried using the speaker sim and then power it up through the cab?
Cheers |

I believe Jim sold his Palmer and ended up using a Hot Plate?
I don't know for sure, but I have used both as a thru box, and to me, they were virtually identical tone wise, when used as a thru. |

| I have used both to provide the line tap for my wet cabs, and IMHO the Palmer wins hands down... I sold the THD and have never looked back.. I use the cheaper line tap with speaker sim PDI-09.. as I had no need for a load box |

| i sold mine once my daughter was born and needed to turn things down some when the girls are home. the thd was easier to do this with cause i could turn downt he dry channel and the signal being sent to the rack was still the same as if i was playing wide open so no need to adjust all that gear etc. i loved the palmer but found the thd to be very good and more versitale(sp). like i said ed used it cause it was the only thing around then. before that he just used a load box made by bradshaw but he was only running 2 cabs then. now he using a line level box made by dave friedman. |

I have the Palmer pdi-03 and use it to drive my rack with two wet cabs. I use the filter/simulator and run an extra power amp for the dry cab. I can get all kinds of tone with this set up, and you can play at room levels or crank it up if you want. More versatile this way. At least for me. Not just stuck with Vh tones. |
