From VHND.com

Van Halen III was released 11 years ago today, on March 17th, 1998.

The album is considered to be the only disappointing Van Halen album ever made, but the tour was another story.

The 1998 tour was the second Van Halen tour when Eddie was clean and sober. While many fans didn’t think Gary Cherone was a good fit for Van Halen, most fans who caught a concert that year loved it. The tour was known for a couple things. Eddie’s playing was flawless on that tour, due to his sobriety and also his overall happiness. That showed itself during the live show as he was completely on top of his game, and jumped around throughout the show with his patented “Flying Eddie” scissor-kick jumps.

While Cherone was not fully embraced by the Van Halen fan base, he was appreciated for resurrecting many David Lee Roth-era gems that had remained buried during the Sammy Hagar years. Fans were treated to many songs that had gone unplayed throughout Hagar’s tenure with the band, including guitar showcases such as “Mean Street”, “Romeo Delight”, “Dance the Night Away” and “Feel Your Love Tonight”. The band even performed “Somebody Get Me a Doctor” with Michael Anthony on lead vocals - a move that was so well received that it remained part of the setlist when Hagar returned for the 2004 tour. Indeed, Cherone’s greatest achievement with Van Halen might have been his decision to play many of the old VH classics. The entire Van Halen catalog has never been as well represented as it was on the Van Halen III tour. It really is the best mix of the Hagar and Roth years that has ever been performed, and of course, it was the only tour to feature material from the III album.

Here's my take on the whole VHIII dramafest.

I own the album, and I love it, it is actually my III'rd favorite VH album (behind Fair Warning and Balance). Ed's playing was spot on (although he was a little sustainer happy). And, IMHO, Gary Cherone has a better voice than Roth and Hagar combined.

The VHIII vids that I've seen on youtube are all superb. Ed never seemed pissed at someone or something and always had a smile on his face. Also, IMHO, the VHIII live tone was absolutely killer.

I honestly wouldn't have minded if Cherone was still around.....not that I'm biased or anything because he grew up 2 cities over from where I live and a lot of my dads friends knew him growing up Laughing

I'm glad to hear you say that Pat. I love the album too. I also agree Cherone is a good singer. I happen to like Extreme though. If you listen to the songs on III obviouly they were written for Sammy. It has all the hooks & licks & turn arounds from the Sammy stuff. Block Cherone's voice out when you listen. Especially Dorty Water Dog, Fire in the hole, just about everything. I liked that album so much I wore it out. Hard to find another copy.

I love this album, too. I've got 5 copies of it... 3 tins, a regular copy and an advance copy from Germany which I won on a radio show comp.

Its a shame that they only release the one album with Gary. They didn't have time to grow. Its a different sounding album, but then again, so was 5150 (compared to the original 6 pack).

Its not the only disappointing album. For me, Diver Down and 5150 are weaker albums.

Diver Down had Hang Em High and Cathedral for gems, that's about it.
5150 was a good overall record IMO, I felt OU812 was their weakest.

My personal favorite tracks off of VHIII are From Afar, Year To The Day & Josephina.

That really should have been the Dave reunion tour following on from '96.

Ed was on fire, but they had the wrong guy on vocals.

Don, you hit the nail on the head. I saws the 2007/08 tour and I enjoyed it. However, in 1996/97 these guys would have been 42 years old not 52 that was the time to reunite with Dave. In 96 they probably could have had some more hit records & sparked up some of the original steam.

I also love VHIII. The songs are a little bit different and there are some different sounds and everything. And actually, I think that Cherone fit in VH quite well.

I like Van Halen 3.

Of course, it would have been 100 times better with Diamond Dave there. But that's another story. Anyway, Gary did a good job with some lyrics. And EVH was stellar, IMHO. Yet the production was darn poor on that album and the more I listen to it the more I think it is like an Eddie Van Halen solo record.

I loved that era. Good tunes, good execution.

I don't think the lady at the 2:05 mark could have done much "jumping" without losing it. Laughing

Has anybody ever noticed that during each era, Eddie took fashion cues from the singer. His style changes as often as the lead singers. Wink

It is much easier to identify EVH & Co. using their costumes to check out. The same goes to some guitars, bass guitars, drum kits and hair cuts.
