My brother and I are interested in recording some stuff, and I'm wondering what would be the best way to do it. We would want the ability to record both of us at the same time but also be able to add in other parts later. I've heard a lot of good things about recording through a computer, but we already have our own studio-ish room that we play in and there's no computer in there, so we'd want something seperate from a computer.

Any suggestions?

Check out the Tascam or the Fostex. They're both excellent products, and they're really affordable.
I like the 8 track because it gives you freedom to be creative and lay down more than a few tracks. That 4 track one is pretty cheap, but with 4 tracks, you may find yourself wishing you had more.

Do yourself a favor if you order one and order more memory along with it. They don't really give you much out of the box.

I'd get a computer in that room eventually. It's so much easier, and Audacity is wonderful for recording.....and it's free.

I'm thinking about getting this one. It has 8 tracks and has 4 inputs, and has the 40 gig hard drive.

EDIT: Found a cheap one on ebay that I might get

Ok, so I think I might just try recording into my computer instead. It seems like getting a seperate device is going to be more expensive. It would be convenient because I could take it to a friend's house and record stuff when we jam, but right now I'd rather just get something that I start recording with. I've heard that the Line 6 products are good for this. I know a lot of people on here do recording like this, so what do you guys use?

My word of advice on computer recording.

If you think that you're gonna do this on a regular basis and store your songs, performances, etc on computer,...then look at getting a separate pc or MAC to house all the required space, programs, and processing power that will give you no issues or cliches as you develop your home recording set-up.

Any decent interface in the $99.00 range will get you good results. Doug likes RiffWorks, and gets very professional results with it.

It's not about how good your software is, it's about how good you are at using what you got.

This guy catches my eye.

Good price.

it aint the cheapest thing in the world, but native instruments are currently bundling the full version of guitar rig 3 with their little audio interface that usually just includes the cut down version. as a non-gigging, bedroom guitarist, i sold off my 5150 combo after getting guitar rig because it is so very very good.

On Musician's Friend right now, they're also giving away a free guitar with that native instruments system. I guess they're really trying to sell it? I'm looking at getting either that one or the Line 6 POD studio ux2.

Zoom make a real easy to 8 and 16 track unit.
It was recommended buy a friend...I haven't tried it yet but he said he is getting super quality stuff.
it cost around 400 bucks and has built in effects.
Computer recording can drive you crazy unless you have some high end stuff.

Ok, this is kind of an opinion question, but I'm hoping you guys that do a lot of recording can help me. Is it worthwhile to get something with 2 guitar inputs, or would it be better to just record all the parts one by one? Right now my brother and I play together a lot, and I sometimes play with other friends. I can think of a couple situations where we would definitely want the 2 inputs (trading off solos, etc.) but besides that, I guess it would be just for fun/convenience.

I personally think that more inputs you have at your use, the better as long as the qlty is good. With some cheap machines, you can hear the bleeding from one track into another, and that could be a real pain when you're mixing or trying to isolate a track.

I think if you've got 2 inputs: 2 instruments or 1 instrument & 1 mic, that are isolated from each other, that's a good start. 3 would be an ideal starting place.

Alesis makes a real good 8 channel board for about 150.00
You can use it with any computer software. and it has over a hundred built in effects and a usb plug.

Wow, I really like the looks of that Alesis one. It looks to have everything I would need now and more.

8 inputs is good for future-proofing, because that gives you the ability to do a good mic setup on a full drum kit. you may not need to do that now, but you never know when it may become useful.
