Anyone tried this retube kit? Comments?
I need to get a dedicated set of tubes for this amp as I'm currently swapping a set of tubes between two amps depending on which one I'm using. It sounds great with JJ's for power and preamp. I usually buy from Tubestore but the price is about the same and Eurotubes supposedly chooses tubes to complement the standard biasing of the amp.
Lower gain would suit my needs better I think. Only difference in the low gain option is a couple of preamp tubes. No big deal to go back to "standard" preamp tubes if I don't like it. Wondering if anyone has any feedback on this retube option though and can compare tone to tone with standard preamp tubes. |

I don't know about the retube kit, but I did want to plug Eurotubes. They're right up the road from me and I've used them to retube my amps a few times. They know their stuff, have excellent customer service and they do take the time to match up all their tubes.
Just curious, why do you want to go low gain? |

| With the low gain option, I'm hoping to clean up the "clean" channel a bit. I'm sure the lead channel will still have plenty of gain. I read on another forum that with the low gain option, 10 on the lead pre is like 6 with standard preamp tubes. |

| Ed's sound is more of a high gain sound isn't it? |

I wouldn't say Ed's sound is "high gain". I'd say it's medium gain. It's clean and dirty at the same time. It's Ed-shui...lol.
I'm not Ed and I don't try to sound like him. Most of the stuff I play calls for a clean channel and a medium gain channel (no more gain than ACDC, for example). I think even with a couple of lower gain tubes in the preamp there is plenty of gain for jamming on Panama.
I just wonder how much the tone of the amp changes, if at all, with the low gain option. For example, is it "creamier" or is it "weaker", etc. |
