This has been floating around lately and I thought it was pretty interesting. It appears that David Lee Roth recorded a track in Portuguese without Van Halen. The song is called “Take Sarava” and was recently put up on this site, the home of NYC based guitarist Jeff Falkowski. The site also features other tracks with former Mars Volta drummer Blake Fleming (who also played on Omar Rodriguez Lopez’ first solo album). According to Falkowski’s myspace, he is also David Lee Roth’s guitar teacher. |

Hey, thanks for the link, TB, I really enjoyed that song.....moreso the guitar playing than the whole thing, but liked it nonetheless. Dave certainly isn't afraid to try different things, but that is most definitely not a character flaw.
Simon, is a "sarava" sort of like a "soiree' "?? |

"Saravá, meu pai, confio em Deus!"
(Save me, My Lord, as I trust in God!)
Joanne, the origin of the word "saravá" comes from another one, salvar (which means "to save"). The slaves here in Brazil couldn't say "salvar" and they started to pronounce as "salavar". Later it became "saravá" using the slaves' phonetical influence of the Bantu community (from Nigeria/Africa). The word has exclusively this religious appeal these days. Just for the record, Slavery in Brazil unfortunately started in 1530 and it only ended in 1888. The Black slaves were brought to Brazil from 1590 to 1850.
BTW, how about part of the portuguese lyrics from "Take Saravá"?
"Tem que tá bonito, tem que dar cura ao espírito
Take Saravá e dizer poemas
Seja assim, moreno,
porque há, desde pequeno,
um lugar se está nessa cantilena
Sonhos e sonhos de lata,
nós merecemos os beijos do lado dos carros amassados
Olho na lua de barro,
não ache que sombra é sonho pirata pulado no lamaçal
Basta ouvir um violão, ter estrada para andar" |

Thank you for that explanation, that is a sad, but interesting story, Simon~~I guess I was just a "little" off (darn online translators lol).
Would love to know what the lyrics in Dave's new song are all about. |

Joanne, you're always welcome.
You'd like to know the meaning of these words?
Here in the thread or pm? |

Got em, Simon. Thanks for taking the time to translate those for me. I think they are beautiful lyrics in Portuguese and translate very interestingly into English. Dave is definitely an original, don't know of anyone else like him walking God's green earth. |

I still don't think that Dave did a nice job with the lyrics for this Take Saravá song. I think I saved the translation I sent to Joanne somewhere. I'll dig around and post it here IF you people still wanna read the words.
You gotta be disappointed though... |
